WorldWideRetro.com, THE original Kustom Kulture Online Community, is now over 13 years old! Unlike the "Wal-Mart" type super communities out there, we aim to serve a narrow niche. Everything you find here is in some way Kustom Kulture related. Be it Hot Rods, Music, Pin-ups, Burlesque, Vintage Collectibles, Tattoos, Motorcycles, Mid-Century Modern Design, Counter-Culture Art or Non-Conformist speech, this is an open community. We do not care about celebrity gossip, Hip-Hop home tracks or how you pimped out your Honda Accord. There are plenty of places that cater to that type of thing if that is what you are in to.
So, pull up a seat, swipe a "Free Retro Graphic", post a tail or a peve on The R.A.N.T. Boards, listen to some real music on WWR Radio, add your favorites to our Kustom Kulture Link Directory, meet some new folks or get reaquanted with some old friends. This is your town. Welcome.
There are many long time members who remember a time when the places to be on the net was RockabillyDating.com for male/female interaction, the H.A.M.B. for Hot Rod related information and discourse and WorldWideRetro was THE community for most anything else retro/kustom kulture/vintage/pin-up/rockabilly/etc. related information on the web. Then came MySpace, followed by Facebook and a multitude of other online "communities" and WWR's member participation and new relevant information steadily dwindled. Our unique hits have fallen from over a million per month to about 30,000 per month at present.
Since WorldWideRetro was originally built as a home for like minded individuals, when the interest and community drifted WWR simply stagnated. Of course we, the operators of WWR, could have made the investment to upgrade the site to a modern "community". However, since this site has never been nor had the goal of being a "money maker", the motivation to modernize when we already had our own hectic lives to live, simply was not there.
We have had numerous inquiries lately to revitalize this once prominant fixture of the Internet. Sure, some of it is nostalgia for the "good ole days", however much of it is in response to the evolution of sites like MySpace and Facebook. These gargantuan communities have become a flurrying barage of advertisements, multitudes of spam, endless "friend requests" from people who have little if anything in common with ourselves, continuous "application invitations" and a simple massivness that makes many of our like minded friends feel more like individuals cast upon despirate islands than members of a real community. In response we are now in the process of highly modifying WorldWideretro.com into a full fledged Facebook/Myspace style community. Our focus will be what we have always been, a retro community. Hot Rods, Pin-Ups, Rockabilly Music, Googie Architecture, Neon, Retro Graphics, Nostalgia, Kitsch, and etc. All other extranious "information" will be filtered out and or deleted. In fact we will not stand people spamming members with monotonous "Which Lost Character Are You" questionaires, rediculous game applications, and other current cash crop pop culture bullshit. If you like that stuff there are plenty of places to find it.
You may see some wierd formatting and possibly some features that are not functioning exactly perfectly over the next few weeks. Please do us a great favor and report any problems, browser issues and feature requests for these improvements as we develope them. As well, we strongly encourage your input. Write an article, give a CD or event review, post on the R.A.N.T. boards, tell us what you want out of your community.
